Michelle Mattalino, Owner/ Executive Director

As the Owner and Executive Director of The Olive Tree and with the ever faithful support of my husband, Kurt and my son, Archer, we spent many years passionately working to bring the first full-time Reggio-Emilia inspired program to the Austin area. In 2009, my dream of offering families a well-rounded, child-led, and beautifully progressive preschool experience became a reality. With our dedication and passion, The Olive Tree is a truly spectacular school and loving community.

I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in Liberal Arts, specializing in child and adolescent clinical psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. My main supported studies were in family systems and how our community and family dynamics impact child development. I also have a Master’s of Business Administration from St. Edward’s University, where I focused on building and developing the operations and educational side of The Olive Tree.

My favorite part of the Reggio-Emilia inspiration is supporting the growth of the individual child and also inspiring individuals to work within a cohesive and peaceful group dynamic. To see groups of children, who care about each other, learn to communicate clearly and respectfully, and participate peacefully in the community they are creating is spectacular. Sculpting with clay or paper is pretty fun too.

"I like the swings, bicycles, hula hoops, and the see saw. I like the snacks and morning gathering, especially singing "Hello Everybody". I also like Chuy (class pet guinea pig). I like gardening, putting the plants in the ground. Whoa! I question a lot of things and like them. I like making a cake in the sandbox. (She joined Archer and Julian.) I like sitting in the shade when I get hot. And I also like playing with my friends." -Mollie, age 4
